World of Eos was very successful from what I've heard. I haven't seen any other brands doing UGC campaigns either, though there are all sorts of creative opportunities to do so. They should incorporate video too, as the video capabilities on many of these cameras is a strong selling point.

Panasonic have also targeted aspiring creatives with their ads for Lumix, which pokes fun at the art-snob stereotype in the way it "Leads by Example"

World of Eos took it a step further with the Photochain, encouraging shutterbugs to submit a photo based off a subject from the prior photo. I don't know whether any other camera brands did a UGC campaign, certainly not as well

This is a recent local example of brands embracing a candid messaging strategy, in politics no less (hat tip to Mumbrella).

Of course, this being politics, the opposition couldn't help taking a dig.

So in a market where brands (political brands in this instance) freely take potshots at one another, who do you think delivers the more effective message? The one being candid about their flaws without hiding behind a bullet-proof vest of irony? The goof throwing eggs at the self-serious?

True, people will never regard brands in the same way as actual people in the social media space, but they are beginning to expect the same behavior of brands as they are of people.

There is a great moment in the great documentary The Corporation, where a forensic psychologist is asked to define a corporation as if it were a person. Its concluded that a corporation would be a sociopath, because they lack empathy and pursue their own ends without consideration for other people. Companies have never been subject to significant public opinion before social media's prevalence, only to shareholder, investor or customer opinion. That is their only impetus, they don't inherently possess human amiability that would motivate them to modify their behavior for the good of society. However that may change as we collectively come to expect more from companies and their faces (i.e. brands).

Look at the way fashion designer and professional foot sucker Kenneth Cole had to check himself after trying to capitalise on the Egyptian protests. The world shouted "that's not cool man" loudly to a brand, even before it was revealed an actual person made the faux pas.

The dynamics "between people and a brand" might get more lifelike online, but I don't think anyone will ever confuse a brand with a real person and treat them as such.

That said, I think I need to stop stating the obvious! How's that for candid?
